22 km course
To ensure the safety of attendees, volunteers and all island residents please
Stay at home if you
- feel unwell
- have a cough
- have a fever
- have a sore throat
- have fatigue or shortness of breath
There will be chartered buses meeting the ferry at the Nelly Bay Terminal for those who have pre-purchased the bus transfer to Picnic Bay. Please print off your confirmation email to show the bus driver as proof of purchase.
To help ensure a smooth registration process, can we please ask those participants on the 22km course catch the first buses to depart Nelly Bay. Those doing the 15km will have plenty of time to catch the second buses.
The Presto Coffee van will be open at the Nelly Bay ferry terminal so you can grab a cuppa while you wait.
Charter buses have also been booked to return everybody from Bungalow Bay Koala Village at 11:50am, 1:10pm, 2:40pm and 4:00pm to meet the SeaLink ferry at Nelly Bay.
If you have not pre-purchased a chartered bus pass, the regular Island Bus service will be operating and you can catch the bus directly outside both the Nelly Bay ferry terminal and Bungalow Bay Koala Village, at your own cost.
Out on the trails we will have a team of volunteers to keep you safe. Give them a wave, a smile or even an elbow bump, they are there for you. Let them know if you are experiencing any difficulties.
Sweepers will be deployed on the trek, at the back of the field, with the aim of ensuring there is no one left on the course unaccounted for. If you leave the trail at any time, please leave your pack in the middle of the trail so the sweeper doesn't go past you.
There will be photographers on course taking amazing photos of all the appropriately socially distanced, smiling trekkers. So make sure to give them a wave 😊
Keep an eye out on Facebook for all the happy snaps!
The start line for the Trek is the picturesque Picnic Bay Jetty. The Trek is a point to point walk and finishes at Bungalow Bay Koala Village in Horseshoe Bay.
The 22km event has two wave starts at 6:15am and 6:30am.
The 15km event wave starts are 6:45am, 7:00am, 7:15am and 7:30am
Due to COVID safe requirements, each wave start will have a colour coded race number to ensure every one starts in their correct wave
Registration, Race bibs and Event briefing
You will need to collect your race number for the Trek at registration. Please ensure that is attached to the front of your shirt for the duration of the event. You will need to check in at the finish line for your race number to be marked off - otherwise we will send out the rescue party!
Pre-Event registration and collection of race number opens 5:30-7:00pm Friday 26th March at Peppers Blue on Blue deck. Collect your number and stay for the live music on the deck. Peppers are putting on a tapas menu and you can always grab yourself a drink.
On the morning of the trek registration opens at 5:45am, Saturday 27th March at the Picnic Bay jetty. To avoid congestion at registration tables, registration will open 30 minutes prior to each wave start.
Registration opens at
5:45am for the 6:15am 22km wave start
6:00am for the 6:30am 22km wave start
6:15am for the 6:45am 15km wave start
6:30am for the 7:00am 15km wave start
6:45am for the 7:15am 15km wave start
7:00am for the 7:30am 15km wave start
Please maintain 1.5m social distancing when lining up at registration.
The Great Island Trek briefing will occur before the start of each wave, at the beginning of the Picnic Bay jetty.
Food at the start line
The amazing food truck Shaka will be set up at Picnic Bay, at the start line, with fantastic brekkie options and great coffee to make sure you are well fed and properly caffeinated for the Trek.
Time cut offs
Even though The Great Island Trek is a not a race, but an awesome adventure, you still need to be moving at reasonable pace.
You have until 11:30am to get to the fruit stall and hydration station at the 10km mark on the course. This is 4 hours after the last wave start. If you arrive after that time you will be redirected by our volunteers to a shorter course for your safety. The 22km trekkers will be redirected down Radical Bay Rd (missing the Forts loop), and the 15km trekkers down Horseshoe Bay Rd to the finish line at Bungalow Bay Koala Village (missing the Radical Bay section).
Unable to complete the trek
If for any reason, after starting the trek, you decide not to finish, please let one of the volunteers know or send a message to 0425796042 notifying us that you have withdrawn from the event. That way we don’t send a rescue party to find you.
In case of emergency
Please ensure you all have a fully charged mobile phone with you. There are parts of the trek course with limited mobile reception, but you will be able to get coverage for most of the course. If you have any difficulty on course please notify the nearest volunteer, or call 000 in the case of an emergency, or Daina on 0425796042.
Having said that, there are areas of the Trek that are quite remote. The last 5km of the trek is an area with little to no mobile reception and no vehicle access which includes the badly deteriorated Radical Bay Rd.
The climb out from Radical Bay to Horseshoe Bay has little mobile reception and is along a steep, rocky track with lots of stairs. Our suggestion is if you are feeling very tired, have soreness, especially in your knees or are generally unsure if you will be able to complete the last 5kms (which could take over 2 hours to complete), that you shortcut the course from the Forts junction straight down Horseshoe Bay Rd to the finish line at Bungalow Bay Koala Village and enjoy a well earned beer!
We will take your bags from Picnic Bay to the finish line at Bungalow Bay Koala Village, Horseshoe Bay. Please ensure your name is on your bag. Bag tags will be available at the Picnic Bay starting area. Once named, please place them on the Destination Adventure utes at Picnic Bay
Water Stations & Electrolytes
The Great Island Trek will not be providing any cups as it is a plastic free event. Please ensure you have a hydration system with you that can be refilled at the water station. It’s likely to be a hot day, so please hydrate yourself well so you can enjoy the Trek experience.
Due to COVID regulations, the volunteers at the water stations will turn the tap to fill your hydration system, whilst you hold it underneath the tap.
Please, at no stage touch the water containers.
Hand sanitiser will be available at all hydration stations.
There will be hydration stations at the start line, the 5km mark at Mandalay Avenue/Sooning Street, the 10km mark near the Forts Carpark, the public water tap on the Forts walk for the 22km trekkers and at the finish line.
We suggest carrying at least 750ml of water per hour. So, if it will take you two hours to complete 5km then you will need to have capacity to carry 1.5 litres of water.
We also suggest packing some food to nibble on along the way – fresh fruit, sandwiches, dried fruit and nut mix are great options.
Food on course
Scallywags Cafe is at the 5km mark if you feel like a cuppa or a snack, otherwise pack what you need.
Our volunteers will be handing out snacks at our fruit stall at roughly the halfway point of the Trek in line with our COVID Safe plan. Please do not touch the food on the table and comply with the volunteers instructions.
Toilet and Shower Facilities
There are limited toilets located at the start line at Picnic Bay - we suggest making use of the toilets on board SeaLink, Magnetic Island Ferries or at the ferry terminal. On course there are toilets at Sooning St near Mandalay Ave, Scallywags Cafe, Florence Bay, Horseshoe Bay foreshore, and Bungalow Bay Koala Village.
Bungalow Bay Koala Village also has shower facilities, if you would like to bring a change of clothes for the post event festivities. Event T-Shirts will be handed out at the finish line.
Our trek partners Mizuno have once again donated over $1000 of prizes to giveaway, including 4 pairs of running shoes.
To enter the competition all you need to do is use both hashtags #thegreatislandtrek and #mizuno on your Facebook or Instagram photos on the day.
Enter as many times as you like, just make sure your posts are ‘public’ so that we can find them.
Winners will be randomly drawn and announced between 12-2pm at the finish line.
Event T-shirt collection
The event tees will be available for collection at the finish line of the Trek at Bungalow Bay Koala Village. You will receive the t-shirt size you pre-ordered. Unfortunately there can be no size changes on the day.
